Several people were killed in a massive shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, on Wednesday night, officials said.

At least 11 people were shot at the border bar and grill incident, including the sheriff's deputy.

The police said that hundreds of people were inside the venue, which hosted a "state night school" for students.

Sgt. Eric Buschow, head of the Ventura district district, said that "more fatalities" were confirmed. He added that the shooter was "down" without giving more details about whether it meant injury or killing.

The gunman opened fire around 11:20. (2:20 ET ET Thursday). One policeman was wounded when he and his colleagues arrived at the scene and "tried to neutralize the threat", said Captain Garo Kuredjian, head of County County Ventura.

One woman said she was in the bar when she heard "a lot of guns".

"We fell down when we heard the guns," she said at MSNBC, without her name. "I looked after me and there was a smoke bomb there."

Other witnesses also reported what they described as a smoke bomb, although police officers said they could not confirm this.

One student, who said he was in the bar every Wednesday for the past few years, told NBC Los Angeles that he had at least 10 friends inside.

"Nobody came back to me," he said, without giving his name. "I want to hope for the best, but I have no idea."

Two passers-by who said they had friends coming to the bar often told NBC Los Angeles they were talking to one man who managed to escape at the bar.

"He told his story of breaking windows, and he and some friends helped women get the first page," said one of the women who did not identify. "His hands were some kind of bloody, he had blood on his face. His friend was shot in the shoulder."

Fire department of the province of Ventura said on Twitter that "several ambulances" were required.

Aerial footage of the scene showed at least eight police cars on the street with flashing lights.

The venue began in 1993 and is described as "a port for dance people of all ages in the country". It is said to have hosted many famous acts, including Beach Boys.

The city of Thousand Oaks, located about 40 kilometers west of Los Angeles, is ranked the third most secure city in the United States this year.

This is the 307th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Archives of Weapons of Weapons.
