Whether physical exertion, extreme heat, excitement or stress – sweat is a constant, though not always welcome to meet people. The body fluid fulfills vital tasks. It regulates body temperature, protects against overheating and keeps the skin's skin clean. In addition, toxins are transported out of the body with sweat. Recently, a new sweat sensor is introduced that reads important information from the body and thus makes a major contribution to sports and health.

A research team from the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senfenberg developed a textile-based sensor that reads important information about sweat in real time. More precisely, the sensor measures the so-called Lactal value sweat. This value gives an indication of the individual metabolism situation and indicates when muscle activity is threatening to dwindle. This is critical not only for sports but for people with heart disease.

What is lactate?

Breathing takes us oxygen. During deep stress an increased amount of it is needed. If the available oxygen is insufficient to cover the energy requirements of these muscles, the body forms the metabolite lactate, which has an acid-promoting effect. Lactate is transported by the sweat out of the body and can then be detected by appropriate sensors.

What are the normal lactate values?

"Anyone who has ever run a stadium as fast as possible, eventually realizes that these movements stop working and cramps," explains Professor Dr. Med. Between 12 and 20 mmol per liter of blood, this is ten times the normal lactate level of an adult, usually below 1.8 mmol per liter of blood, the expert explains.

What does lactate say about the body?

If the lactate level is too high, there is a sign that human muscle activity is dwindling. "If the individual maximum lactate value is known, training effects can be stuck out," explains Professor Dr. Med. SJJ's research director in a press release, according to the research team. The sensor also contributes to heart disease

The sweat sensor is not designed for sports activities only. Even people with cardiovascular disease may benefit from it. Because certain heart diseases are similar to basic values ​​of lactate, they are detectable, which can be found in human health only under physical exertion. "One can imagine how stressful the everyday life in these cases must be," stressed Professor Michel.

Sensor should be available in about two years

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Together with the Technical University of Dresden Institute for Textile Machinery and Textile High Performance Materials, the research team now wants to develop suitable textiles with the lactate sensor in the next two years.
