The novelty traditionally consists of several parts, which are ideal to evaluate separately. The campaign has other currencies, the zombies mode returns in full beauty and multiplayer has something to catch up with last year’s share. The content is well put together, each fan will come to themselves in a different phase.
Best Mode: Zombies
I was the first to find a mode two years ago in Black Ops IIII in a game with Zombies two years ago, and I was the first to discover a mode where you discover a mysterious map in a quartet and gradually hordes of The undead roll over you. And you can feel that the authors do the phase best, and if they add more maps to it, this could be the biggest show in the series.
The intro will show you the place where the various experiments were made, and suddenly after the experiment, dangerous mutated species began to climb out of the bunker, and it did not take long until they deciphered unsuspecting civilians. Meanwhile, a map of Die Maschine awaits you, where a military unit comes to the site of an old World War II bunker, begins to explore it and zombies are gradually rolling.
The game mechanism is light: you gradually get some tasks to do (open the bunker, turn on the electricity, activate other devices, go to different portals) and in the meantime more waves of zombies rolling over you. You have a number in the corner, so that you know where you are on the bike, and if you shoot in the waves, you know parts of the map and for the money you earn, you can charge or get new weapons, bombs or Obstacles to barricades.
The advantage of this mode is that you enter the event armed with a decent arsenal and you do not have to buy everything (otherwise you started with a simple gun). But you still have to earn and shoot for the soul. The first 8 to 10 rounds are still quite manageable, but as soon as the first trips to the portals come, the atmosphere will start to thicken, the number of zombies will dramatically increase and with such a round no. 14-15 goes hard.
Then you will find that a well-played team has a huge advantage – if the zombies knock you to your knees, a team can find you and give you a good shot so you can fight on. Just in the later rounds, there is no exception that two of the four are already co, waiting for rescue, but the others have something to do to shoot at them.
Die Maschine is an excellent map in the genre. Sometimes there are even radioactive bosses that can not fall so easily to the ground, and you usually have to fire them together. This also applies to other bosses, the rounds are really challenging and it is necessary for the team to stick together and be able to train them.
Another mode is Dead Ops Arcade, where you destroy waves of zombies, collect weapons or bonuses, move to the next map and the whole event works in 2D. This is a good arcade that has dozens of rounds and serves more as an extension of the main map, but you will enjoy a lot of co-op fun.
In addition, PlayStation players will get an onslaught mode, where 7 maps alternate and you and another player are waves of enemies on a designated part of the map. It works like a classic horde, where you want to survive as long as possible and the limit is a piece of map where you have to stay, otherwise the environment will quickly kill you. This mode is exclusive to PS4 and PS5 gamers until November 1, 2021.
The campaign is noisy, dynamic and short
The good news for fans of Call of Duty campaigns is that the authors did not hit this time. While last year, the campaign struggled compact, but this year you will devour it in 5-6 hours, and the authors choose a different style. The serious tone of the terrorist threat is replaced by an occasional light glance of the Cold War, scenes and missions after rolling around red phones, spies, Berlin or KGB, and it is clear that you have fun here rather than think.
The CIA. Russell Adler comes to the old acquaintance, and the authors draw the well-known events in many missions. Ronald Reagan is even here closed, but his motives, along with his team of advisers, are a bit strange and pulling the classic archetypes of how Americans have to take more than one operation to change anything in the world, and the other side will not Get further in their motives. Fast-cutting scenes are used to create conflict, but we understand what this is about: the Russians are dangerous, they are fencing here with atomic weapons, spies are almost everywhere and the operations are demanding.
If you are ready to take on the campaign as a Hollywood shooter, where you enjoy a different mission every half hour, you are at the right address and besides the length, you have nothing to disappoint. There are excellent scenes where the director inserts explosions and shootings, determining heroes and experienced units. The campaign will often try to get you to the goal in time – but remember that it is often so scripted that even your potential failure may not mean the end of the mission. If someone needs to escape from the action, even a restart for the fifth time will not help you reach the time limit.
But the welcome change is that, unlike the older campaigns, you sometimes get a choice of options that change the nature of the characters or the outcome of the scene. Traditionally, you can decide whether you want to perform anywhere by shooting or using a stealth stealing mechanism. Some missions are counting on a spy deployment, so they slowly become a shooter a la Hitman – quietly with a silencer, occasionally snap documents or get to the file, and it’s not for nothing that the mission at the KGB headquarters in Moscow is Also celebrated.
Although my favorite is the missions in Berlin with an absolutely great atmosphere of fragmentation and the situation in the city, where it was full of various operations. And when you think that a standard shooter and stealth will be enough, there will be crashing scenes where you get married and shoot in cars or board a helicopter and you will be shown a different shooting or sound side of the game.
I like that the missions are scripted, but they have an ideal set, and it’s a shame that instead of a whole trip, they mention the best of ideas that the authors have in their creation. If they take the time to think even more about the whole line, they may have a longer and better campaign. This is how the last warfare of last year has the upper hand …
Multiplayer has just started
And finally, there is multiplayer, which I had in the early days, but I feel that players are familiar with maps, weapons or the system. After two weeks, some have already flown to fairly high levels and are well versed on the maps, which is related to their low number – there are only 8 of them, while modern warfare has twice as many last year.
Traditionally, I was the first to start playing the big hardpoint mode of last year, where the team tries to occupy the selected point on the map and keep it for what it gets points. And the second team tries to conquer it so that the points of the competition stop counting and eventually lean to their side. It’s still a quality mode, it’s not played by so many players. But the maps are good and the experts will be sure to be sensible with selected profiles of shooters and arsenal.
These modes do not lack classics such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Free for All, Kill Confirmed. In addition to HardPoint and Domination, I spend a lot of time in the classic Deathmatch, where the six will stand against the six and go classic for the greatest number of hits. There is nothing wrong with this mode, and when you learn the maps, you can spend some good evenings here until more come.
From our own modes, we can mention combined arms, where a 12-member unit fights against the second dozen with vehicles: some are motorcycles (cartel), other tanks (crossroads) or even boats (armada). Motorcycles and tanks are a classic, but the map of Armada is interesting that you move on boats to other parts and move between ships, you can even dive underwater or try different falls. And elements of the escort type of the VIP member are also mixed to a specific point on the map when the enemy tries to beat him as soon as possible.
Fireteam: Dirty Bomb is designed for just 40 players and there are many places. It tries to evoke the feeling of battle royale mode, you fight in groups of four, but after death it can resuscitate in a new place and you continue to fight. Your main task is to collect uranium, detonate bombs and earn points.
After two weeks, I feel that Multiplayer will still need some improvements. It’s not even about the number of modes that gradually jumped into modern warfare last year, but about balancing the content and especially a larger number of maps. This is as if the card was turned this year – the authors have spied a lot of fashions, but fewer locations. And obviously, many players are wondering how they turn to Black Ops Cold War and another hit of the series – Battle Royale Warzone, sometime in December.
What platform to play?
As you may have noticed, PlayStation platforms have an advantage this year in the exclusive onslaught zombies mode. In addition, the PS5 version supports the DualSense driver so that each weapon behaves differently when playing a campaign and has unexpectedly excellent feedback. So the controller “throws” you off and you have a different feeling than the game. If you are a big fan of zombies or want to try other games, the PS5 is the perfect choice.
But you can also enjoy a lot of fun and high-quality optimized performance on Xbox platforms. Personally, I’ve tried playing Black Ops Cold War on the Xbox One X and Xbox Series X, and both provide a great fast experience, with the Series X also understandably loading data faster. The new Call of Duty is however again a huge game – while older consoles can be under 100 GB, for example, the Series X already takes 135 GB.
In both cases, the next-gen platforms have their benefit from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and if you play an entire year, it’s definitely worth getting the version right away.
Despite the fact that the authors added a pleasant portion of content in the beginning, the Black Ops Cold War starts less strongly than last year’s work. The campaign is fun, but shorter. Zombies mode is great, but so far it has only one map. And multiplayer has many modes, but fewer maps and slower overall. Obviously, Call of Duty evolves over time, so after two weeks it is not possible to give the final result of the stain, but until now it has been a higher average shooter, but a slightly weaker part of the series than the last back of the Last year of modern warfare.
