After several years of development, Samsung finally showed a prototype smartphone with a customizable display. The serial production of the conditional Galaxy F will only come in 2019. The presentation took place after the launch of similar novelties by start-up Royole, and other brands are developing customizable displays. Flexible smartphones can become a popular trend in the case of commercial success on the market.

Samsung Electronics demonstrated the prototype of its first coupled, customizable on-screen smartphone with which the company developed with Google. The presentation took place at the annual Developer Conference (SDC 2018). Samsung also showed an updated interface for One UI smartphones, which is, among other things, adapted to the flexible display; Bixby voice assistant ecosystem and cloud platform for the Internet of Things Things SmartThings.

Smartphone smartphones are still a prototype without a name, they can be called Galaxy X or Galaxy F. Price and start of sales are also not disclosed. It is expected that the commercial start-up of the device will take place next year. Probably the final version of the smartphone or tablet phone is published in January at the CES in Las Vegas or in February at the MWC in Barcelona.
Samsung has launched the launch of Royola for several days with the introduction of a production version of its customizable smartphone. Similar developments are taking place, especially Huawei, Lenovo and LG. However, Samsung plans to create various customizable displays in the future. In the event of a successful commercial launch, flexible smartphones can become a trend in the mobile phone market in 2019, but their high price may endanger the sale of such devices.

Tablet in your pocket

Presented at the prototype demonstration works in two ways and is therefore equipped with two screens. Indeed, Samsung has shown an enhanced hybrid of the smartphone and Tablet PC without bending on the screen of the latter. When folded, this is smart, only longer and thicker – a 4.6-inch 60×60-inch display and a 21: 9 aspect ratio. When it's open, the smartphone turns into a Tablet PC with a 7.3-inch AMOLED display and a resolution of 2152 x 1536. The screen of such a tablet is called the Infinity Flex Display.

Samsung Dong Jin Ko, president of Samsung Mobile, said that the development of a flexible smartphone lasted many years and proved to be "very technically difficult." The device is designed for hundreds of thousands of stacking and unwinding cycles without losing the screen quality. To display the screen, Samsung must make the panel underneath it thinner than any other gadget. This was achieved by reducing the thickness of the screen polarizer. Here is 45% thinner than other smartphones.

Samsung's vice president of marketing, Justin Denison, said at the presentation that the gadget will be the "basis for smartphones of the future" and that Infinity Flex screens "are the biggest step forward in mobile display technology over the past 10 years." The developer emphasized that the production of the screen uses special composite polymers, resilient and rigid. Engadge sources found that the Infinity Flex customizable display module was designed for these purposes, a permanent glue for screen protection and a protective layer with a special polymer that combines flexibility and power.

It should be noted that Samsung at the beginning of the year showed two prototypes of smart smartphones, one of them was bent 7.3-inch screen inward and the other outside. Launched in November, the smartphone belongs to the first series, which initially envisaged several options for early commercialization. Screen versions with external sources Korea Herald also announced mass production, but in the second generation.

A multi-volume book

In addition to transforming into a tablet, the key advantage of the customizable smartphone has also developed a multifunctional Window technology, adapted to a flexible display, simultaneously. Thus, applications running on a small "side" screen are automatically downloaded to the main screen with the ability to display and operate up to three active applications. The work of this mode will be provided by the user interface UI UI, which Samsung also presented at the presentation.

In addition to working with the Multiactive Window, the interface allows you to provide information in one area, which may be relevant to the user, and to separate the content range from the control area. At the same time, the controls in one user interface will be located at the bottom of the screen, making them easier to reach on large smartphones, which is the case for individual buttons and pop-up blocks with interactive elements. Samsung has already launched open beta testing of one user interface in Germany, Korea, and the United States.

Simultaneously with the launch of Samsung in California, a Developer Summit Developer Summit was held, where Google announced that the Android mobile operating system now supports folding devices, and the Korean company has become the first partner. Google's vice president for Android Development Dave Burke said at the launch that a serial smartphone with a customizable display will be released in 2019 and support for customizable displays will be available to all manufacturers of these gadgets.

Flexible competitor

Developing Flexible Impressions Asian manufacturers say the last 5 years. So, in 2016, Lenovo showed a smart bracelet with a customizable display, LG announced plans to release a smartphone with a flexible OLED display and 65-inch television receivers that can be folded into a special unit, Microsoft issued a patent, and promised Huawei to release such a device in 2019. However, the first commercial product managed to present the American launch of Royole (Rouyu).

At the Beijing conference, Royole Corporation introduced a flexible FlexPai smart display. The device is equipped with a diagonal of the screen 7.8 cm in open state, and when folded, it is divided into three screens: front, back and side. The AMOLED display has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and is switched only one way, outward, that is, Royole went after the rejected Samsung script. At the same time, the outer surface of the gadget is not symmetrical – there is a large lane on one side of the screen, with two cameras with a resolution of 20 and 16 megapixels, as well as a flash.

Royole claims that she performed a series of FlexPai tests prior to the presentation. Thus, the screen has passed over 200 thousand tests for twisting and bending, and tensile and other types of deformations at different angles. A separate type of test was a test of collision – the AMOLED board was dropped from different heights. In total, Royole carried out nearly 120 types of tests, which lasted nearly 1,000 days.

In addition to the revolutionary display, the developer also unveiled the latest QualcommSnapdragon Series 8 Series Series processor, which was built with 7G process technology supporting 5G networks, 6 to 8 gigabytes of memory, and 128 to 512 built-in, and there is also a storage slot Microsd cards The smartphone works on Anrdoid 9.0 with Royole Water OS firmware and plans to invest $ 30 million in OS development. The pre-order for FlexPai started on November 1, with the gadget being available at prices from $ 1,291 to $ 1,864, depending on the amount of RAM and internal memory.
