The price of … the bulb flames

The rise in bulb prices is due to lag between production periods and increased demand during Ramadan's month, which is an imbalance between supply and demand, the ministry said. Agriculture, maritime fisheries, rural development and voters and forests, ensure that prices will "return to normal" with the gradual entry of bulb output of the current season.

Several reasons, combined with a price hurdle with the arrival of Ramadan, accompanied by a very strong demand for some agricultural and food products, said the ministry. In a statement, some clarification on price changes of these products , The main bulb.

Ever growing winter onions (green onions) are negatively exposed in the rain-fed areas (Bour) by light rains, especially in the months of January and February, the statement said. During this period of adverse climatic conditions in the winter onion production areas in areas such as Chaouia and Doukkala and in the lower reaches of Sais and Zer, were responsible for a nearly 33 percent decline in production, the same source.

Green onion marketing comes to an end in May, and the month of April marks the end of the marketing and storage period for the last season's dry bulb and the beginning of its new crop.

Since this time, compiled this year with the start of the month of Ramadan 1440, when household demand is increasing, the market has experienced a disruption due to imbalance between supply and demand, which has exerted pressure on prices. 5 to 6 dh / kg for fresh onions, an increase of 50% compared to 2018. The increase is greater for the dry bulb which comes at the end of the stock with very low volumes on the market. The effect of this increase is the increase in the cost. However, "it is expected that prices will return to normal with the gradual entry of onion production at the current time and the slowdown in household demand with the development of Ramadan's month," reassured the ministry.

As for tomatoes, production is at a good level, the statement said, adding that the market of Ramadan has a good supply and a good price.

Early and late-early tomato production was significant in the 2018/2019 campaign, resulting in lower volumes placed on the local market during the month. from May.

Nevertheless, the harvest in the coastal area of Safi in Mohammededia, the largest seasonal tomato production area, is only in its infancy (selective harvesting), said the ministry, adding that full entry into production, expected within a week, will radically change it. Market situation.

As of May 7, 2019, the price of tomato has been posted in the wholesale markets of Fez 3.40dh / kg, Casablanca 4.33dh / kg, udjda 3.50dh / kg, Marrakech 3.50dh / kg, leaf 3.50dh / kg and tangier 4.00 DH / kg.
