European Commission funding to the International Organization for Migration
An additional EUR 43.7 million from the European Commission, the International Migration Organization will receive emergency assistance to support Greece in refugees, and in particular to address the needs of housing and the protection of the most vulnerable groups of refugees ahead of the winter.
The amount is taken from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Facility to provide emergency accommodation, which covers as many as 6,000 asylum seekers and refugees, to quickly accommodate temporary accommodation facilities.
"Financing is aimed at ensuring decent living and basic assistance and protection services for the most vulnerable immigrants in Greece, especially in the coming winter months, and to facilitate the host structure on the Greek islands," the European Commission said.
This funding decision is added to more than EUR 1.6 billion, which the Commission has approved since 2015 to tackle the challenges of immigration in Greece.
