Coffee – a natural ally of brain health

Coffee is one of the favorite drinks of the Germans. Be energized, motivated and encouraged. What was previously unknown: coffee protects our brain from dementia, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The higher the level of baking the beans, the more effective is the protective function, according to a Canadian research group in a recent study.

Contrary to previous assumptions, more and more health benefits of coffee are emerging. Researchers at the Canadian Research Institute Krembyl in Toronto recently found that coffee consumption reduces the likelihood of developing dementia, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. For the protective effect, it seems that the compounds are primarily responsible for the formation of coffee during roasting. The results of the study were recently published in the journal "Frontiers and Neuroscience".

Coffee is better than her reputation

Is coffee healthy or harmful? A number of studies have appeared on this issue in recent years. In the past, coffee was considered to be rather unhealthy because it was said that the dehydration effect that is now considered to be rejected. In fact, coffee is healthier than most people believe. At the same time it calms down and stimulates and aims to prevent type II diabetes and heart disease. Recent research also suggests that coffee can protect our brain against neurodegenerative diseases. However, high coffee consumption can contribute to hyperactivity and thus stimulate gastric and reflux problems.

Roasting has a protective effect

The Canadian scientific team has proven that drinking some of the coffee beverages may be beneficial for brain health. But how popular hot drinks support cognitive function? Researchers found the basis of non-caffeine protective mechanisms, but in compounds released during roasting coffee.

The same effect on coffee without caffeine

We searched heavily roasted caffeinated coffee, as well as heavily roasted caffeine, as well as roasted caffeinated coffee. The team found that highly roasted varieties, regardless of caffeine, have a stronger protective effect. In further tests, many compounds, the so-called phenylindanes, crystallized as responsible for a positive effect. These compounds form during the roasting process and give coffee a typically bitter taste.

How do roasted compounds protect our brains?

According to researchers, roasted coffee compounds ensure that less toxic proteins can bind to the brain. These so-called tau and beta-amyloid proteins that are deposited in the lungs in the brain are considered to be the release of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Prolonged roasting is crucial

As the research group points out, a long time of roasting is responsible for the formation of protective dust compounds. It does not matter whether coffee was caffeinated or not. The greatest protective effect on the brain is therefore based on dark roasted varieties.

The Canadian team is thrilled with the discovery, especially since the protective effect stems from a completely natural process. This does not require synthesis in the laboratory and allows the product to be so easily produced and available. "Mother Nature is a far better chemist than us," explains Dr. Ross Mancini, one of the leading study scientists, in a press release on the results of the study.

Is coffee now a dementia drug?

"The purpose of this study was to show that in fact there are ingredients of coffee that are useful for preventing cognitive decline," concludes Mancini. These processes are very interesting, but it is still too early to declare the coffee as a medicine, the expert warns. (Vb)
