Many people experience this winter in winter: when you get home in the evening, it's cold in the room because heating was heated in the morning. But this can be avoided. Programmable thermostats can even be used by domestic companies to improve.
The thermostats on radiators significantly differentiate how high the energy consumption is in the household. For standard versions, the desired room temperature can only be set manually, and programmable devices are more intelligent.
They also regulate the temperature in the absence of residents. "The replacement of old thermostats with modern ones is being paid," says Andreas Braun of the Central Sanitary Heating Sanitation Association in Sankt Augustin near Bonn. "They offer a lot more ways to save on heating."
The thermostat constantly measures the temperature
The thermostat keeps the temperature in the room at a certain level. "The thermostat does not work as a faucet from which more water is poured, it opens more," explains Braun. The thermostat constantly measures the temperature. By choosing the number on the thermostat, the user decides about his comfort temperature. "Level 3 means about 20 degrees, level 5 controls 25 degrees," says Reinhard Loch from the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center. "But these are only guidelines. It depends on the location and the spatial conditions, the temperatures of which are achieved with individual rates."
If the room temperature falls below the set value, the room is heated. Then the thermostat switches off until the temperature falls below a certain value. "It works through a small insert inside the thermostatic head," Braun explains. "Inside, there is a fluid that spreads when the temperatures rise and drags down when the values fall. This limits or expands the flow of the valve."
Smart thermostats can do more
Most thermostats work according to this principle, either manually, digitally or wirelessly. "Intelligent thermostats can do much more than standard thermostats," explains Braun. "If they are individually programmed for the daily routine of the population, they can be used to save additional energy."
For example, during the absence: if there is no one in the apartment, the radiators are even cooler. Before the family gets home, a thermostat starts and the rooms will have the desired heat upon arrival. Different temperatures are also possible on different days in individual rooms.
Smart thermostats can even be controlled through the application and reprogrammed. "More specifically, the behavior of controls meets demand and outside temperatures, the more economical the heating system will be," says Brown.
Put yourself in the right place
To operate the thermostats properly, they must not be installed in places where the temperature is higher or lower than in the rest of the room. "Sensors are measured continuously. If they are for curtains, furniture, or in radiator niches where heat is warming, this can be faked in value," Braun points out. Radiators cease heating, although the set temperature in the remaining room is not yet reached. Remedy can afford thermostats with remote sensors.
"Although there are many technologies to control programmable thermostats, it's relatively easy to assemble yourself," says consumer advocate Loch. The devices are available in specialized stores or DIY stores. Renters can replace thermostats to get comfort with programmable models. However, you must retain the old devices so that they can restore the original state in the case of a passage.
Before purchasing, you must see how the old device was installed. "There are essentially two types of attachments: screw thread and bayonet lock," explains Norbert Heinze, coach at DIY Academy in Cologne. The new thermostat must have the same type of attachment. Then the old thermostatic head simply unfolds and re-installs. For the screw cap you need a water pump clamp. Bayonet locks can even be opened and closed without tools. "When replacing the old thermostat, it must be fully switched on," advises Loch. "This makes it easier to lower the valve and make it easier to remove the head. The new programmable thermostat must be set in the installation mode in accordance with the instructions for use."
The change of the thermostat should be possible without problems and without violence. If this is not the case, the expert's assistance is announced. "It is important to move only parts that belong to the thermostatic head," stresses the academic teacher Heinze. "The layers should keep your fingers from screw connections to radiators or pipes." Loch also says: "As soon as there is not only a thermostat, but an actual valve needs to be replaced, the change is a case for a specialist."
