A Twitter user claims to be an anonymous football championship, winning a following on the social media platform after announcing his intention to come out as gay, apparently changing his decision to reveal his sexuality.
The supposed player has previously explained his intentions, in a series of tweets, to become the first active professional footballer since 1990 to come across as jolly as he played in the top four divisions of the game.
However, a new post on Tuesday – one day ahead of his self-set up day – revealed a clear change of heart. An initial brief explanation on Twitter simply said:
Afterwards, there was a more substantial tweet dismissing those who criticized him before the account was apparently closed.
He has my full support. Join me on @talkSPORT From 10.

The sudden news prompted speculation that the whole thing was hacking. However, the player has received much-needed support, with figures like the Sports Broadcaster Jim White recently showing he was in direct correspondence with the unnamed star.
The news was widely accepted and welcomed by most as a positive step forward for the game. The EFL has previously struggled to persuade footballers to come out while they are playing, despite anonymity.
@FootballerGay has close to 50K followers Twitter prior to its closure.
