Low calorie Mediterranean diet contributes to weight loss and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with overweight and metabolic syndrome. This was discovered by scientists at the Spanish university "Rovira and Virgili". The study included more than 600 patients aged between 55 and 75 who had obesity or overweight as well as metabolic syndrome. Despite the fact that low-fat foods and carbohydrates are effective in terms of weight loss and reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease, there is no scientific evidence that the long-term benefits of such a diet are a new study of a significantly different type of food – the Mediterranean has shown that 33.7% of patients who lost a year later lost at least 5% of their initial weight. Compared with study participants who did not follow this diet, their use of glucose significantly improved.

There is also a difference in the fact that, over time, the positive weight loss rate continues, explains the researchers. The Mediterranean diet includes the consumption of large quantities of fresh vegetables and fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and pasta based grains. It is also recommended to reduce the consumption of red meat and give priority to fish and sea gifts.
