It is an event that rarely occurs, but Sunday morning it was the time: the Tyrolean avalanche warning service “imposed” avalanche warning level 5, i.e. very high risk, over eastern Tyrol. Spontaneous avalanches can be expected in the course of Day of high catches changed, in some cases also very large. But at the same time, the head of the avalanche warning service, Rudy Meyer, calmed down a bit: Due to the relatively warm temperatures and occasionally a lot of rain, one can Expect wet snow avalanche, not dust avalanche. The latter would cause greater damage.
The fact that the avalanche in eastern Tyrol is currently very tense was made clear by the departure of a flat Saturday night in Fragraten am Großvenediger. Four houses and one vehicle were damaged. People were not injured. Even on Sunday, there were other slabs with individual damaged buildings.
The emergency services also have to fight on all fronts because of the heavy rainfall in the state – in East Tyrol and in North Tyrol along the main alpine ridge from the burner to the Ötztal: power outages (in the afternoon there were around 2,500) , Isolated mudslides and flooded basements and trains – and road blocks. Governor Gunter Flatter (ÖVP) has secured East Tyrol financial support. District Chief Olga Reisner appealed to the population to stay home.
Lots of fresh snow in Carinthia
In Carinthia, huge amounts of fresh snow in the Lesachtal, Gaital and Upper Moltal led road blocks. The milder temperatures at lower elevations caused some slopes to slide, and mudslides blocked roadways. According to the City Press Service, SPÖ Regional Councilor and Disaster Control Officer Daniel Fellner appealed to the population in all places affected by weather to stay in their homes.
All emergency vehicles from the road maintenance stock have been regularly used to check the precipitation. Fellner asked the people of Upper Carinthia to heed the commands of the emergency services: “Please stay in your houses and do not climb on the snow-covered roofs so that they can crawl freely”.
After avalanche slopes, some roads are closed, and snow chains are compulsory on others. During the course of the afternoon and into the evening, the snow in Lower Carinthia increasingly turned into rain showers. For the night it is expected that the precipitation will decline, but there should be some storm wind in the caravan valleys.
According to the first data evaluation, the 24-hour fresh snow amounts at some ZAMG weather stations in the affected areas of the two federal states are in the record range. Even a “record” was exceeded. For example, in Umhausen in the Ötztal (1030 meters above sea level) there is snow around 80 cm from Saturday to Sunday, the record for 24 hours there was 45 cm from October 2013. Measurements have been made here since 1956.
On the burner (1,400 meters) it snowed around 90 cm from Saturday to Sunday (record: 100 cm, measured in March 1975). In st.
According to ZAMG, there is snow around 100-150 cm from Friday to Sunday morning on the mountains of Upper Carinthia, East Tyrol and in the area of the main Tyrolean alpine ridge, sometimes a little more. According to the forecast, around 100 to 100 cm of fresh snow will come around Monday. After this, the situation should ease. Sunday morning the Fohen storm reached more than 100 km / h in the mountains. (APA)
