Since Land on Mars last week, NASA's InSight Lander has taken pictures of himself and his environment as he prepares to unload the scientific instruments he took to the planet.
But the module has also captured what other missions on Mars have never accomplished: the Winden's audio from the planet.
"Capturing this audio was an unexpected surprise," said Bruce Banerdt, InSight's chief investigator, in a statement. "But one of the things our mission is dedicated to is to measure movement on Mars, and naturally that includes the movement caused by the sound waves."
The audio is recorded at both an air pressure sensor and through the seismometer on board the insight. The sensor detected air vibration directly while the seismometer recorded the vibrations caused by the Martian wind blowing through the solar panels of Insight. Scientists estimate that the wind blows between 16 and 21 km / h.
"The insight module acts as a giant ear," said Tom Pike, who is part of the science team. "The sunshade panels on the side of the longer respond to the fluctuations in the wind pressure, as if insight was plugging their ears and listening to the wind of hitting them when looking at the landing module vibrations coming from the Solar panels, coincides with the direction of the wind in our landing site. "
In the video below it is possible to listen to the Martian wind audio. NASA recommends using headphones or subwoofer because the tone is quite low. But the video also raises the audio of two octaves to make it easier to listen.
Recording the seismometer is only possible during the early stages of the insight mission, as it is placed on the mashion surface, a dome will protect it from the wind and scientists will actively filter the vibration of noise from the lander. This is because the main purpose of the seismometer is to detect seismic movements on Mars.
